CHESA Residents & Medical Student GME Pathway

Eligibility: UCSF* medical students and UCSF* residents 

Duration: 2 weeks of in-person didactics (GHS 103 course), 1 month asynchronous GHS 101x course and longitudinal scholarly project

UCSF medical students and UCSF surgical and anesthesia residents are encouraged to enroll in the GME Global Health Pathway Program and explore mentored projects with CHESA faculty members.

This pathway offers structured in-person and online course work to introduce UCSF trainees to key concepts in global health, to facilitate networking with other global health trainees and faculty on campus, and to provide a broad overview of global health work ongoing at UCSF and partnering institutions.

For anesthesia trainees, applications open during CA1 year and for surgery residents during R2 year. GHS103 and 101x courses are completed during CA2/PGY3 year and trainees pursue a scholarly project during research elective time allocated by their department at the discretion of program directors.

Medical students apply during MS2-3 years to participate during MS4 year.

Trainees with 1 year or more of non-clinical project time are encouraged to also apply for the CHESA Fellowship.

UCSF HEAL Fellowship

Eligibility: Post residency training and board eligible or board certified in the US

The UCSF Health, Equity, Action, Leadership (HEAL) Initiative is a unique fellowship opportunity for healthcare providers who are passionate about global health equity and global health delivery both in the US and around the world.

Through a partnership between the HEAL Initiative and CHESA, this global health equity fellowship pathway offers a unique, advanced training opportunity for US-licensed, board certified (or board eligible) physician anesthesiologists, surgeons and certified registered nurse anesthetists (among other disciplines). Fellows will join a multidisciplinary cohort of more than 70 fellows to work in Native American reservations and some of the poorest communities around the world. Surgery and Anesthesia HEAL fellows are based in Navajo Nation and Uganda.

Fellows are paired with local health professionals who are already working at our domestic and international partner sites. HEAL Anesthesia & Surgery fellows develop skills essential for global health delivery through immersive training, a professional development courses/programs and intensive mentorship.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply approximately 12 months prior to the desired start date.

Prerequisites for the HEAL Fellowship include US board certification (or board eligibility at the time of enrollment) in surgery or anesthesiology and possession or eligibility for a US medical license. For CRNA applicants, an RN license, CRNA license (or eligibility) and credentialing by the NBCRNA (National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists) or eligibility for credentialing are required.

NIH Fogarty GloCal and T32 Fellowships

UCSF Anesthesia NIH T32 Training Pathway

  • Eligibility: Citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (in possession of a valid Alien Registration Receipt Card, or “green card”) at the time of appointment. Candidates must have received a PhD, DVM, DDS, MD, or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution. Non-ACGME and postdoctoral fellow pathways available.
  • Duration: 2-3 years
  • Health equity track available
  • Mentorship from CHESA Faculty and concurrent participation in CHESA Fellowship available

UC Global Health Institute GloCal Fellowship

  • Eligibility: US doctoral students (PhD, DrPH, etc.), professional students (MD, DDS, DVM, PharmD, etc.) and postdoctoral fellows, as well as foreign postdoctoral fellows from affiliated international sites in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
  • Duration: total of 12 months, with 11 months spent at international partner site
  • The GloCal Health Fellowship supports a 12-month, mentored research fellowship for investigators interested in studying diseases and conditions in developing countries.
  • Mentorship from CHESA Faculty and concurrent participation in CHESA Fellowship available

CHESA Anesthesia Fellowship Pathway

Eligibility: Post anesthesia residency training and board eligible or board certified in the US; (This fellowship may also be incorporated into UCSF Anesthesia Residency Research Track)

Duration1-2 years, with optional MPH

The CHESA Anesthesia Fellowship is a non-ACGME fellowship pathway based at UCSF’s Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Fellows will have clinical appointments at ZSFG/UCSF and be given the opportunity to receive advanced training in trauma, obstetrics and regional anesthesia. Fellows are supported for up to six months per year to work on research, education and policy projects focusing on health equity at ZSFG or international partnering sites.

Both one and two-year pathways are available. For a two-year option, fellows spend the first year in the Master of Science in Global Health program at the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences. Fellows must apply to the master’s program separately and funding availability varies by year.

As part of the CHESA family, fellows will join the cohort of multidisciplinary CHESA Fellows and have opportunities to work with many ongoing global health initiatives at UCSF and partnering institutions.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply during their CA-2 year.

Prerequisites for the CHESA Anesthesia Fellowship pathway at SFGH include ABA board certification (or board eligibility at the time of enrollment) and possession of or eligibility for a California Medical License (2113 licenses may be considered). Please check back as we are working to facilitate CRNA Global Health Equity Fellowship positions as well.

CHESA Urology Fellowship in Global Surgery & Health Equity

Eligibility: Research year of UCSF Urology Residency, Fellowship, or Medical School (non-UCSF Urology trainees may still apply for the core CHESA Fellowship pathway above) 

Duration1 year, with optional MPH or Masters in Global Health

The CHESA Urology Fellowship is a non-ACGME fellowship pathway based at UCSF’s Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. UCSF-based urology research residents will maintain clinical appointments at ZSFG/UCSF.

For those fellows who pursue a master’s degree, Master’s of Science in Global Health program at the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences or Master’s of Public Health at UC Berkeley will be completed during the fellowship year. Fellows must apply and be accepted to the master’s programs separately.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants need to apply the year prior to their designated research year. Master’s programs deadlines apply for those applicants interested in a simultaneous degree during their fellowship.

MedEd Simulation Fellowship

Eligibility: Post residency training in anesthesia or surgery

Duration1 year (2-3 months in San Francisco)

The Global MedEd Simulation Fellowship Program is a 1-year non-ACGME program hosted at UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) and co-sponsored by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).

This program is available for medical educators from low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The fellowship is hosted at UCSF’s Kanbar Simulation Center, the SFGH Simulation Center and the SF VA Simulation Center in San Francisco, CA, USA with the ultimate goal of adding an additional fellowship training site in East Africa.

Fellows will spend up to 3 months in San Francisco receiving intensive training on simulation methodology, then return to their home institutions to implement simulation projects.

The overall goals of the fellowship are to develop expertise in simulation as an educational strategy, to acquire foundational skills to conduct scholarly work in the area of simulation and to gain the skills necessary to implement simulation-based medical education programs. To accomplish these goals, the fellowship consists of a combination of coursework and experiential learning as well as stipend support for a mentored project in the fellow’s home country.

CHESA Summer Internship

Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate trainee (with preference given to underrepresented minorities and first generation trainees)

DurationJune – August

This Visiting Scholar position with UCSF CHESA is open to anyone currently enrolled in a health-related undergraduate pathway (e.g. premed or pre nursing) or graduate program (including residency training) with interest in international or domestic global health equity as pertains to anesthesia, surgery or pain. The position is unpaid and those accepted will be appointed as Visiting Scholars at UCSF.

Applicants are encouraged to consider a Global Health Masters at UCSF (tuition is not available at this time via CHESA).

UCSF trainees are encouraged to pursue the UCSF GME Global Health Pathway or other research training pathways offered through the School of Medicine with mentorship from CHESA (See above).

Global Surgery Student Alliance

The Global Surgery Student Alliance (GSSA) is the national student-run global surgery working group for the U.S., affiliated with InciSioN (the International Student Surgical Network), with the mission of educating, inspiring, and uniting students through engagement and mentorship in global surgery, anesthesia, and ob/gyn. We believe that students are a valuable resource for the advancement of global surgery. Unifying in our efforts will facilitate collaboration and further global surgery efforts, both now and in the future. By exposing students to the field early on, we hope to help them build their surgical careers with global surgery in mind. Ultimately, many students are willing and able to make significant contributions to global surgery, and we hope to be a resource that facilitates those efforts.

GSSA at UCSF’s mission is to connect UCSF medical students to global surgery opportunities, foster a robust global surgery community spanning all levels of training, and work towards sustainable, equitable, and accessible surgical, obstetric, and anesthesia care worldwide.

CHESA Otolaryngology Fellowship

Eligibility:

Board-eligible or Board-certified Otolaryngologist graduated from an ACGME-accredited residency program or senior level ENT resident from an ACGME-accredited residency program on a dedicated research year.

Non-ACGME and International Otolaryngology applicants are eligible for the remote CHESA fellowship, but at this time are not eligible to apply for this combined clinical fellowship.

Duration:

1-2 years, with optional MPH or Masters in Global Health

The CHESA Otolaryngology Fellowship offers a one-year funded program for a board-eligible or board-certified Otolaryngologist (ACGME accredited Otolaryngology residency graduate). Fellows spend at least six months at UCSF participating in clinical duties within the Pediatric Otolaryngology division of the Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and six or more months at the Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This is a non-ACGME fellowship pathway.

As part of the CHESA family, fellows will join the cohort of multidisciplinary CHESA Fellows and have opportunities to work with many ongoing global health initiatives at UCSF and partnering institutions.

Fellowship Structure

· Fellows spend at least 6 months of their year at UCSF, participating in project development, global health equity curriculum and clinical/surgical responsibilities.

· Fellows are paired with UCSF Otolaryngology Faculty with ongoing projects in domestic and international health equity. They will complete longitudinal projects with these faculty as mentors. Fellows with existing or external global health equity projects are also encouraged to apply.

· Fellows spend the remainder of the year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (at least 6 months) as a clinical instructor fellow at the Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), participating in clinical/surgical care delivery, surgical education and health equity projects in partnership with Otolaryngology trainees and attending surgeons in Cambodia and UCSF.

· OHNS CHESA Fellows participate in regular online seminars with other CHESA Fellows and global health mentors across multidisciplinary surgical and anesthesia specialties throughout the year

· Fellows with external funding or existing partnerships in the global health space are also welcome to apply and may participate in health equity projects at other sites abroad (currently only the Children’s Surgical Centre, Cambodia rotation provides a living expense stipend while abroad).
