IGHS – CHESA Grand Rounds: Partnerships to advance global surgery

Drs. Phyllis Kisa (Makerere University) and Doruk Ozgediz (UCSF) met in 2012 and have since collaborated in training, research, advocacy, and the coordination of global stakeholders for surgery. Join them for a dialogue about the role of surgery in achieving the SDGs and UHC; global challenges in surgery and perioperative care; lessons from Dr. Kisa and Dr. Ozgediz’s 8 years of partnerships to advance equity; and what they see when they look to the future of surgery and perioperative care.
This IGHS Grand Rounds is convened in partnership with UCSF’s Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia. It will be chaired by Dr. Haile Debas, known for his integral roles in global health in the UC system, including IGHS and CHESA. The Grand Rounds will be moderated by Chelsie Anderson, MS Candidate, MD Candidate.

Doruk Ozgediz, MD, MSc
Director, UCSF Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia
Dr. Doruk Ozgediz, MD, MSc is Associate Professor of Surgery at UCSF, Director of the UCSF Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia and in the leadership team of the Institute for Global Health Sciences. He trained in medicine at UCSF and completed a general surgery residency at UCSF before pursuing a pediatric surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto. Dr. Ozgediz also completed a Master’s of Science in Public Health in Developing Countries at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Ozgediz became involved in surgical collaborations in Uganda in 2003 and since then has been part of multiple collaborations to strengthen surgery and anesthesia care there and in the region, mostly through support of capacity-building initiatives.
Phyllis Kisa, MBCHB, MMed
Lecturer, Makerere University College of Health Sciences
Dr Phyllis Kisa completed medical school at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, then got her MMed in General Surgery from Makerere University and Fellowship in General Surgery of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). She completed her pediatric surgical fellowship training with COSECSA, a hybrid training with part in Uganda and part at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada in pediatric general surgery and pediatric urology. She completed a formal clinical fellowship in pediatric urology at BC Children’s. She is a lecturer in pediatric surgery at Makerere University and conducts research in perioperative nutrition and improving pediatric surgical care.
